Open Table MCC continues to break barriers by championing faith and inclusion through its active participation in the Free to Be Me (F2BM) Philippines program. Represented by Rev. Joseph San Jose, the progressive Christian church has been part of the F2BM Communities of Action (CoA) since 2022 and took part in the program’s closing event held last August 20, 2025.
Historic Alliance Between LGBTQIA+ & Christian Leaders
Open Table MCC was entrusted with the GPS Year 2 Project, which ran from June 2023 to July 2024. The project explored the intersection of Christianity and SOGIESC. It convened LGBTQIA+ advocates and Christian leaders for dialogue and to examine opportunities for advancing equality within faith communities and institutions. This was a landmark project considering, for the first time, these leaders came together not in opposition but in a safe space for dialogue and mutual care.
In fact, the Humanis Foundation (formerly Yayasan Hivos), the program organizers, commended Open Table MCC and the project team for their efficiency, integrity and professionalism. The representatives included Rev. Jack Nicklaus Quimpo, Joshua Rex Cheng, Ammiel and Charles. Theology consultants Prof. Kakay Pamaran and Rev. Carleen Nomorosa also played key roles.
Additionally, the GPS Year 2 project facilitated in improving the financial process and project management of Open Table MCC as a church organization. Along with these direct outcomes, the church was blessed with a new rented worship space, increased membership and attendance, and an expanded network and reach.
Safe Spaces for Queer Christians: The Progress Continues
The path towards unity and change continues even after the program has concluded. It is worth noting that Rev. Joseph participated in the sustainability planning for the F2BM CoA. The discussion emphasized ongoing collaboration and mutual support despite the program coming to an end.
The F2BM ran for a total of five years. It was co-hosted by the Philippine Anti-Discrimination Alliance of Youth Leaders (PANTAY). Moreover, 12 countries from the Middle East, Asia and Africa participated in the program.
