What is the meaning of a Holy Union?
A Holy Union is a ceremonious wedding held regardless of the couple’s gender identity and sexual orientation. This celebration of love is affirmed by the Church, family and friends of the couple.
Holy Union in the Philippines
Holy Unions in the Philippines are conducted by various churches. One of the pioneers is the Open Table Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). Open Table MCC has been conducting same-sex weddings since 1968.
Holy Union vs marriage
A Holy Union is not the same as a marriage. Holy Unions are mainly religious ceremonies. They are not registered in the City Registrar and Provincial Statistical Office (PSO). However, the Union Certificate may serve as Proof of Togetherness for immigrants since it is recognized in countries with marriage equality laws such as the USA or Canada. With that being said, it is highly advisable to first consult the embassy or immigration office of a particular country regarding its legal effect.
Open Table MCC has a global presence with 250 member congregations in over 23 countries. Due to its established presence, there is a strong likelihood that the Holy Union certificate could support spousal petitions, as well as immigrant and family visa applications.
Holy Union requirements
Holy Union requirements include a Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR), original birth certificates, valid government IDs and a completed registration form. At least two witnesses of legal age are also required during the ceremony.
Are LGBTQIA+ weddings in the Philippines available outside of Luzon?
Yes, LGBTQIA+ weddings are available outside of Luzon. It is worth noting that the farther and more logistically challenging the wedding venue is, the higher the associated cost will be. This is to account for the time, effort and well-being of Open Table MCC’s Pastor or Lay Minister.
Can a Holy Union rite be conducted online?
No, a Holy Union rite cannot be conducted online. All ceremonies are done in-person to ensure the sincerity of the couple’s commitment and to prevent misuse or false assurances in relationships that may require further discernment or readiness.
Holy Union in the Philippines: A Step-By-Step Guide

#1 Read the guidelines & requirements
The first and most important step is to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and requirements regarding Holy Unions. Understanding these details will also make sure you meet the requirements and increase the chances that your application will be approved.

#2 Fill out the application form
Once you confirm your eligibility and understand the guidelines, you can proceed to fill out the application form, usually located at the bottom of the webpage. You can access it through the links below:
You can expect replies every Monday and Tuesday, Philippine Standard Time. To prevent delays or errors during correspondence, you are required to have a Gmail account. Other email platforms may direct emails to spam folders or cause system errors.
#3 Undergo a counselling interview
All couples are required to undergo a counselling interview. During this time, they will be made aware of their responsibilities toward each other in preparation for receiving God’s blessing. Other details regarding the ceremony will also be discussed. Counselling will be conducted via Zoom, and the presence of both individuals is needed.
#4 Select a schedule for your ceremony
After completing the counselling interview, you can now pick a schedule for your special day. When choosing a date, make sure it does not fall on any of the following days:
- Holy Week
- May 1 – Labor Day
- June 12 – Independence Day
- Last Weekend of June (Pride Celebration)
- September 11 – September 22 (Anniversary period of the Church)
- First Sunday of October
- October 30 – November 3 (Days for All Souls)
- December 22 – January 8 (Christmas Break)
Additionally, the Church is on sabbatical every August. Therefore, there will be limited dates available for booking during this month.
